The Société des transports de Rimouski is an organization that brings together accessible paratransit and regular public transit taxi services.

In 1984, the City of Rimouski initiated an accessible paratransit service to meet the special needs of residents with disabilities to make it possible for them to get around in complete security and safety.

The Société des transports de Rimouski handles the administrative management and operations for the city’s accessible paratransit services. Through contracts with private transportation companies, the Société has two accessible mini-buses, one accessible taxi and a fleet of regular taxis.

Feel free to get out and about - independently
The main mission of the Société is to increase and promote the integration of people with disabilities in the community by helping them gain easier access to a wide variety of activities.

Coverage area
Paratransit services are available everywhere in the City of Rimouski, every day from 7 a.m. to midnight, including holidays.

Eligibility for accessible paratransit services
Eligibility for paratransit services is controlled by the Politique d’admissibilité au transport adapté the paratransit eligibility policy issued by Quebec's ministry of transportation. Anyone who meets the following two criteria may be considered eligible :

1- The person must have a disability, that is, have a significant, persistent impairment;persistante;

2- The person must have limitations to mobility, including at least one of the following :

  • inability to walk 400 metres (435 yards);
  • inability to go up a step with support, or step down without support;
  • inability to make a trip on public transport;
  • inability to keep track of time or find one’s bearings;
  • inability to handle situations, or behaviour that could represent a danger for oneself or for others.

A local committee, made up of a representative of the City of Rimouski, a representative of the health services network and three representatives of people with disabilities, is responsible for evaluating any request for eligibility received by the Société and for rendering a decision.

Thus, a person who is declared eligible can have access to Rimouski’s paratransit services and to other paratransit services when travelling elsewhere in Quebec. All you have to do is request that the Société des transports de Rimouski transmit certain information from your eligibility file to the paratransit service provider of the place you plan to visit.

To file an application for eligibility for paratransit services, you must first obtain an application form from the Société des transports de Rimouski by calling 418 723-5555.

Cost
No matter your destination or the distance travelled, the price per trip is $3.10 ($2.30 for students). You can also buy a monthly pass at the package price of $103/month ($77/month for students) which allows unlimited trips from the first day to the last of each month. Booklets of 20 tickets are also available for $62.

Assistance from the driver
To facilitate the mobility of their passengers, drivers provide personal assistance adapted to the needs of each client. They help clients negotiate obstacles, such as the thresholds of exterior doors, at the pick-up point and the destination.

The passenger should be at the main door of the location requested, at the pick-up time agreed when the reservation was made.

The assumption of responsibility begins at the main door of the pick-up point and ends at the main door of the destination.

The user will facilitate the trip by ensuring that the entry to his or her residence is accessible. During the winter, the driveway, walkway and steps should be shovelled and free of ice. If a person in a wheelchair needs to go up or down many steps, he or she cannot ask the driver for help. The user should thus plan for another form of assistance.

How the service works
When declared eligible, each person is assigned a user number. From then on, trips can be arranged as follows :
