Quebec Maritime Institute

L'Institut maritime du QuébecFounded in Rimouski in 1944, the Institut maritime du Québec (IMQ, the Quebec maritime institute) is dedicated to training skilled, specialized professionals for the maritime, transport logistics and professional diving sectors.

In addition to a solid theoretical education, students enrolled at the IMQ benefit from excellent preparation for the concrete realities of the working world well before receiving their diplomas, thanks to their numerous internships with companies.

Unique in Quebec, the IMQ successfully fulfills its mandate because it can rely on the constant collaboration of its highly qualified personnel, recruited from the four corners of the world.

Recognized worldwide, the IMQ offers its students training in marine engineering. navigation and naval architecture. Every year, the IMQ awards diplomas to skilled professionals in all fields related to the sea and maritime transportation. In addition, the institute offers introductory courses in maritime safety for pleasure boaters and refresher or upgrade training for experienced sailors in various specialty areas, such as professional diving and emergency procedures at sea.

The Institut maritime du Québec has also recently added a new program leading to a Bachelor's degree with a major in maritime transport and a minor in administration. The program awards a B.S. in applied sciences from the Université du Québec à Rimouski. This new opportunity to pursue university studies in a field explicitly related to maritime transport is a first in Quebec, and its partnership approach adds a new dimension to Rimouski's maritime vocation, while developing a new bridge between two of the region’s educational institutions.
